One of the most common problems associated with weight gain is the appearance of a double chin. A double chin is nothing more than a layer of fat that accumulates just below the chin. Although a double chin is usually associated with weight gain, sometimes loose skin and genetics can also cause a double chin.
Either way, a double chin can be unpleasant and may affect a person’s confidence. Fortunately, there are a number of cosmetic procedures that can help to remove this excess layer of fat below your chin. One of the newest and most popular ways to help get rid of a double chin is through Kybella injections.
KYBELLA INJECTIONS
Kybella miami is a product consisting of synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is instrumental in destroying the fat cells that have developed under the chin. After they are destroyed, the double chin gradually disappears.
One of the most interesting aspects of Kybella injections is that once the fat cells are destroyed, they rarely return in the future. This means that once the initial treatment is completed (usually requiring two to three sessions), further sessions will not be required for maintenance.
YOUR CONSULTATION
Prior to the Kybella treatment procedure, you will need to meet with your plastic surgeon for a consultation. Your surgeon will evaluate the skin under your neck and the thickness of the fat layer in order to customize the injections accordingly.
Make sure to discuss any previous drug allergies with your plastic surgeon during your consultation in order to avoid any complications that may arise during the procedure.
You are asked to refrain from smoking or taking painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen before coming in for Kybella treatment, as these are blood thinners and may cause complications during the procedure.
THE TREATMENT PROCEDURE AND AFTERCARE
The entire Kybella injection procedure will take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. The treatment involves using anesthetic to numb the area and then injecting the area under the chin multiple times. The number of injections depends upon the extent of the fat that has accumulated. The Kybella injections are administered during treatment sessions (usually two sessions) until the treatment is no longer required.
After the procedure, patients experience swelling and bruising around the area where the injections have been given. This is normal and is a temporary side-effect of the procedure. The swelling and bruising will eventually subside. Patients may use ice packs and cool compresses to aid in the healing process.
Most patients recover within a day or two, but the recovery time also depends on the number of fat cells that have been destroyed, so a second session usually causes less swelling and requires less recovery time. Patients may experience discomfort while swallowing solid food immediately after the procedure, but the discomfort will subside like the other side-effects. Your doctor may prescribe pain medications, which are to be taken as instructed.
Definite results are seen about six to eight weeks after the procedure when the body’s immune system has destroyed all the dead fat cells. The skin under your chin gradually tightens, and results keep improving over the next three to four months. There is little downtime after the procedure; most patients return to their normal routine within a day or two.
