What Latisse Does for Your Eyes

Originally, Allergan (the company that created Latisse) developed prescription-level eyedrops containing bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% as a treatment for glaucoma. It can help to lower intraocular pressure.

Patients undergoing the treatment began to report they were also enjoying longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes—and were even growing new ones. Allergan took notice and did clinical studies on this ingredient as a treatment for hypotrichosis—the thinning and loss of eyelashes.

In 2008, Latisse received FDA approval as a hypotrichosis treatment.

How Does Latisse Work?

The active ingredient in Latisse extends the anagen phase, the growth phase of your hair cycle. This allows eyelashes to grow longer and thicker before your body naturally sheds them.

At the same time, Latisse in Pembroke Pines can stimulate hair follicles to produce longer, darker, and fuller hair in the growth phase.

Applying Latisse to Your Upper Eyelid

In Allergan’s clinical trials, they only applied Latisse to the upper eyelash line, and that is where the FDA approved its use for hair growth. Because Latisse indiscriminately promotes hair growth, we don’t recommend its use on the lower eyelid. This avoids the risk of seeing unwanted hair show up in other areas, such as the upper cheeks.

After approval from our Latisse doctor, patients usually apply the medication each night before bed, in the comfort of their own home. This gives the skin plenty of time to absorb the solution overnight, all while allowing you to maintain your normal routine in the morning.

  • Step 1: Cleanse your eyelids. Remove any makeup, and also take out your contact lenses (if you wear any).
  • Step 2: Put a single drop of Latisse solution on the applicator. Yes, just one.
  • Step 3: Apply Latisse to the base of the upper eyelashes. Go from the inner part of the lash line to the outer part.
  • Step 4: Clean up any excess so that hair only grows where you want it to.
  • Step 5: Using a new applicator, repeat steps 1 through 4 on your other eyelid. Dispose of the 2 applicators when you’re done, and get ready to grow your lashes!

What to Expect for Results

With this simple at-home application, you can expect noticeable results from Latisse in Pembroke Pines within 8 to 12 weeks, with optimal results usually showing at about 16 weeks.

You’ll need to apply Latisse daily for those first 16 weeks. Once you achieve your best results, you’ll go into a maintenance phase, which reduces the number of times per week that you need to apply Latisse.

In the end, you get to enjoy lush Latisse lashes where there used to be thinning, short lashes, for eyes that look deeper, refreshed, and more alluring.

A gorgeous view of the beach and ocean waves at sunrise. It's part of the Miami vibe people enjoy when they come to Salas Plastic Surgery & The Love MedSpa for Latisse in Pembroke Pines.

Options That Support Those Beautiful Eyes

As Latisse in Pembroke Pines improves your eyelash game, we offer other choices that further improve how you look and feel.

Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Latisse can help the lashes on your upper eyelid grow longer and stronger. It cannot, however, address any droop or misshapenness of the eyelids themselves. To show off your new lashes even more, eyelid lift surgery can refine, reshape, and rejuvenate your eyes for that more open, youthful appearance.

As part of your individualized treatment plan, you can choose to have your eyelid lift done before you start Latisse. Most doctors recommend waiting at least 2 weeks after surgery to give the tissues time to heal before applying the Latisse solution to the lash line.

We may be able to perform the blepharoplasty after the 16-week course of Latisse treatments has passed, so that you already have the full benefits going strong. With a 2-week hiatus before continuing your Latisse maintenance, we can look at strategies for when you resume ongoing Latisse support to keep your lashes luscious.

Morpheus8 RF Microneedling

Using an advanced, customizable combination of microneedling and radiofrequency (RF) energy, Morpheus8 tightens skin and boosts natural collagen production. The personalized settings allow Morpheus8 to be used on the delicate skin near the eyes.

With Morpheus8, we can:

  • Diminish under-eye bags and hollows.
  • Improve skin texture.
  • Reduce fine lines around the eyes.
  • Add more volume to sunken areas.
A Salas provider, wearing gloves, holds the Morpheus8 hand-held applicator agains the middle of a young woman's brow. Many patients choose this to help highlight their eyes after having Latisse in Pembroke Pines.

We can perform Morpheus8 treatments without the need to pause your Latisse treatments. As for the rest of your face, Morpheus8 can help diminish stretch marks, scars, and sagging skin. Now your eyes will shine from a glowing face—making the most of your inherent beauty!

Laser Hair Removal

Latisse in Pembroke Pines helps you grow hair where you want it—along your upper eyelash line.

But what about hair that grows on its own where you don’t want it? Laser hair removal at Salas Plastic Surgery & The Love Medspa lets you “zap” unwanted hair almost anywhere. Our precision technology from Cutera and Sciton can remove hair from areas including your back, arms, neck, and face, so that they don’t distract from your best features (like those dazzling eyes).

You can continue your Latisse therapy concurrently with your laser hair removal treatments. Most patients only need up to 6 treatment sessions for effective elimination of hair. Each session progressively reduces hair growth, leaving your skin soft and sleek for the long term.

Latisse FAQs

As we help patients invest in their natural beauty and confidence, several questions commonly pop up about Latisse in Pembroke Pines.

Do I need a prescription for Latisse?

Yes, you will need a prescription for Latisse therapy. To have Latisse near you, request an appointment for an exam. Dr. Salas will examine your eyes and eyelids, and talk to you about your medical history. If this consultation determines that you’re a suitable candidate for hypotrichosis treatment, you’ll receive a prescription for Latisse.

Will my lashes fall out if I stop using Latisse?

Your lashes will return to their previous appearance after ceasing Latisse therapy. Latisse temporarily increases the growth period for eyelashes. Without maintenance treatment for eyelash enhancement, the hair follicles will eventually return to the previous growth patterns that caused the sparse appearance.

Can I wear mascara while using Latisse?

Absolutely, you can wear mascara while using Latisse in Pembroke Pines if you so choose. The only caveat is to let the Latisse solution dry first before applying makeup (including eyelash extensions).

However, many patients realize they don’t need mascara anymore in their daily routine.

Are there any side effects of Latisse?

Every patient differs, so there’s no simple answer. The most common side effects can include:

  • Mild itching
  • Redness

Less common side effects can include:

  • Temporary darkening of eyelid skin
  • Potential for iris color change (extremely rare with proper application)

We thoroughly educate every patient on the proper application techniques to best avoid these potential side effects.
